Summary Account

Environmental issues ranging from global to local scales, including global warming, ozone depletion, regional air pollution and urban heat islands, have remained a major concern in the current society. Challenges undertaken by the Atmospheric Environment and Applied Meteorology Research Department involve (1) clarifying the processes of change in atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, ozone and aerosols using numerical models and observational methods, (2) assessing climate change in Japan and the surrounding areas using high-resolution regional climate models, (3) evaluating local climate variability due to urbanization and microscale environmental changes, and (4) understanding physical processes controlling turbulent transport of momentum, heat and mass in the atmospheric boundary layer.
