Information on the sea is indispensable in the island nation of Japan for the prevention of coastal and oceanic disasters and for the clarification/prediction of climate change, as the ocean plays a major role in the climate system. To meet related needs, JMA runs an oceanographic and marine meteorological observation network, collects data on nationwide and global scales, and issues various kinds of information for public use. As a basis for these tasks, the Oceanography and Geochemistry Research Department (OGRD) develops methods for observation and analysis, analyzes observation data and constructs numerical models to clarify and support the prediction of oceanic phenomena. The OGRD places special emphasis on the analysis of oceanographic data from research vessels and satellites, observation with profiling floats, and the development of ocean general circulation models and ocean data assimilation systems.

OGDR also studies temporal variations and spatial distributions of chemical constituents in the atmosphere and ocean, and work to elucidate the biogeochemical and climatological mechanisms controlling their distribution in the earth system. The ultimate aims of these efforts are to further elucidate the geochemical behavior and fate of chemical constituents in atmospheric, oceanic and terrestrial environments and to assess their ecological effects. To achieve these goals, the OGRD observes the increasing presence of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere using specific platforms such as commercial airlines and a meteorological tower with particular focus on the outflow of pollutants from East Asia. OGDR studies the air-sea exchange processes of greenhouse and other gases between air and sea via on-board observation, and also studies the long-term variability of total inorganic carbon in the ocean in response to climate change.
