Research Overview

picture-bu There is a strong need to develop technology for improved monitoring and forecasting of high-impact weather phenomena such as localized heavy rainfall, torrential rainfall, tornadoes and other gust-related hazards toward the prevention and mitigation of damage from these disasters. Meteorological Satellite and Observation System Research Department staff develop data analysis techniques for meteorological satellites and/or observational systems such as cutting-edge radars, and also carry out observational studies to clarify the mechanisms of high-impact weather. Further efforts will also be made to develop new meteorological observation technologies in order to provide a basis for the design of next-generation observation networks at JMA.
